Aaron Taylor-Johnson: natty or not?
Uncertain English actor known for Kick-Ass, Godzilla, Bullet Train, and Kraven the Hunter
Short answer. Verdict: uncertain. At the peak physique on this page, Aaron Taylor-Johnson is 5'11" (180 cm) and 200 lbs (90.7 kg) at roughly 10% body fat. That works out to an FFMI of 25.2, against the ~25 mark cited as the natural ceiling.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson is an English actor whose build has swung from lean supporting-actor frames to action-lead bulk across Kick-Ass, Godzilla, Bullet Train, and Kraven the Hunter. He is listed at 5’11” (180 cm) across his Wikipedia biography.
The timeline
No measured weight survives from before he started building muscle for roles. At 19, in Nowhere Boy (2009), he is described as baby-faced and gangly, well before any reported transformation. We use about 150 lbs (68 kg) at roughly 15% body fat as a baseline estimate for a lean, untrained man of his height — not a sourced figure, so treat the whole timeline that follows as resting on a soft starting point.
By Kick-Ass 2 (2013), he had reportedly bulked to 175 lbs (79.4 kg), and for Godzilla (2014) he said he was “pushing 190” lbs (86.2 kg). Both figures are reported at around 10% body fat, a round number repeated across fitness coverage rather than a measured one.
For The Wall (2017), he told Men’s Health his everyday weight was “generally 170lb” and that training pushed him “up to about 195lb” (88.5 kg) — a hike with a 45 lb weight vest each morning, heavy squats and deadlifts each afternoon, and a deliberately loose diet built around In-And-Out Burger runs. He was after size, not leanness, by his own account.
For Bullet Train (2022), reporting describes him slimming down 20–30 lbs for a leaner, faster-moving character — no absolute weight survives for that role, so it stays out of the table below, but it shows a pattern: his weight swings substantially from film to film.
For Kraven the Hunter (2024), the reporting is the most dramatic: a six-month plan that took him to a pre-production bulk of 230 lbs (104.3 kg), before he was “chiseled down” to a “supervillain peak” of 200 lbs (90.7 kg) for filming, at a reported 10% body fat. The training was an upper/lower split four to five days a week, close to failure, with conditioning work mixed in for stunts; the diet cut out pizza, pasta, and alcohol for two years.
The math
Using each era’s reported weight and body-fat estimate, fat-free mass moves like this (height 180 cm, all body-fat numbers are journalist estimates, not DEXA scans):
| Era | Weight | Body fat | Fat-free mass | FFMI |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nowhere Boy (2009, est.) | 150 lb (68 kg) | ~15% | 127 lb (57.8 kg) | 17.8 |
| Kick-Ass 2 (2013) | 175 lb (79.4 kg) | ~10% | 158 lb (71.5 kg) | 22.1 |
| Godzilla (2014) | 190 lb (86.2 kg) | ~10% | 171 lb (77.6 kg) | 23.9 |
| The Wall (2017) | 195 lb (88.5 kg) | ~10% | 176 lb (79.7 kg) | 24.6 |
| Kraven (2024) | 200 lb (90.7 kg) | ~10% | 180 lb (81.6 kg) | 25.2 |
Taken era to era, the sourced numbers are unremarkable. From the estimated 2009 baseline to Kick-Ass 2 in 2013, he added about 30 lbs (13.7 kg) of fat-free mass over roughly four years starting at 19 — well inside natural novice-to-intermediate gains at that age. Godzilla to The Wall to Kraven adds only about 9 lbs (4.1 kg) of fat-free mass across ten years, which is slower than the natural ceiling, not faster. If these lean-to-lean numbers are the whole story, there is nothing here to flag.
The number that does not fit that story is the reported 230 lb (104.3 kg) pre-production peak for Kraven — a scale weight he had never reported before, reached inside a six-month training block at 33–34, well past when natural testosterone has already turned downward. No body-fat estimate for that bulk phase survives, so treat this next figure as illustration, not fact: even at a generous 18% body fat during the bulk (fluffier than his usual lean-role numbers), that pencils out to roughly 190 lb (86.2 kg) of fat-free mass — about 10 lbs (4.5 kg) more than the lean Kraven peak, and about 34 lbs (15.4 kg) more than his 2017 Wall-era fat-free mass. Thirty-plus pounds of new lean tissue, some of it inevitably water and glycogen from a deliberate bulk, compressed into months, at an age past his natural peak, is exactly the kind of jump the method flags hardest — even though the number he actually held on camera (the leaner 200 lb Kraven peak) is not itself remarkable.
Steroids
No failed test, no official record, and no on-the-record admission. Comic Basics reports that Taylor-Johnson has denied steroid use in press-tour interviews, attributing his physique to training volume and diet — a denial, not an admission, and worth exactly that much. Actors are not drug-tested for a role, so there is no testing regime to weigh either way; an untested environment raises the prior slightly but proves nothing on its own.
Verdict
Uncertain. The genetics case is real: a lean, unremarkable-to-good FFMI across most of the timeline, a modest overall rate of gain from 2009 to 2024, and a body that visibly de-trains between roles are all consistent with a naturally gifted, well-coached actor doing normal Hollywood transformation work. Set against that is one flag that does not resolve cleanly: the reported 230 lb pre-production bulk for Kraven, a scale weight he had never hit before, built in six months in his mid-thirties. We don’t have a body-fat number for that bulk phase, so we can’t say how much of it was lean tissue.
What would change our mind: a sourced body-composition figure for the 230 lb Kraven bulk phase. If it turns out to be mostly fat and water over a lean platform he’d already held for years, this becomes likely-natty. If a verified measurement shows most of that 34 lb swing was lean mass, that is the kind of compressed, past-peak gain the method treats as decisive, and this becomes likely-enhanced.
In their words
“I ate crap! After my morning hike, I went to In-And-Out Burger for brunch most days. I'd get two Four-By-Four Burgers – so that's four patties in a burger – two of those for brunch and washed it down with a milkshake. I knew if in that one meal I could put in 3500 calories I'd put on some size pretty quickly. I'm generally 170lb and I was up to about 195lb!”
“Every morning, for the whole morning, I'd put on a 45lb weight vest and walk pretty fast up the hill then run down again. In the afternoons I'd go into the gym and do pretty heavy squats and deadlifts. I wanted to put on bulk and size. I didn't want to look lean and muscular — I just wanted that size.”
Common questions
Is Aaron Taylor-Johnson natty or on steroids?
This site rates Aaron Taylor-Johnson as uncertain. That is an opinion drawn from public numbers, not a statement of fact: the peak physique on this page works out to an FFMI of 25.2, against the ~25 mark cited as the natural ceiling.
Has Aaron Taylor-Johnson ever failed a drug test or admitted to using PEDs?
Nothing of the sort turned up in the sources on this page. Had it, the verdict would read confirmed instead of uncertain.
What is Aaron Taylor-Johnson's FFMI?
About 25.2. That comes from 5'11" (180 cm) and 200 lbs (90.7 kg) at roughly 10% body fat, normalized to 1.8 m. Drug-free lifters in the Kouri 1995 study topped out near 25.
