Jeff Bezos: natty or not?

Uncertain Amazon's founder, and the most-memed physical transformation in business

Short answer. Verdict: uncertain. At the peak physique on this page, Jeff Bezos is 5'7" (171 cm) and 170 lbs (77 kg) at roughly 14% body fat. That works out to an FFMI of 23.2, against the ~25 mark cited as the natural ceiling.

No official record settles this. What follows is opinion and analysis based on public numbers — how we judge.

In the early 2010s Bezos “started to wear tailored clothing; he weight trained, pursued a regimented diet and began to freely spend his money,” and the change has been compared to Amazon’s own.

The numbers

The FFMI on this page is far below the drug-free ceiling our methodology page cites. He is a normally-built man in his fifties and sixties who lifts weights. The photographs are startling only against the photographs of him in 1999.

The transformation people share is mostly posture, body fat, clothing and about fifteen pounds of muscle accumulated over more than a decade, which is what happens when a man with unlimited resources hires a trainer and keeps showing up.

Why this is not likely-natty

Because of what we cannot see. Executive medicine at his level includes routine hormone panels and prescriptions to correct them, and testosterone replacement is standard care for men his age with low readings. Nothing suggests it in his case, nothing rules it out, and his body would look the same either way.

Verdict

Uncertain — a small physique that needs no exotic explanation, achieved at an age where the ordinary explanation cannot be distinguished from the medical one.
