Ross Edgley: natty or not?

Uncertain Swimming 1,780 miles around Great Britain, at the size of a rugby forward

Short answer. Verdict: uncertain. At the peak physique on this page, Ross Edgley is 5'11" (180 cm) and 231 lbs (105 kg) at roughly 15% body fat. That works out to an FFMI of 27.5, against the ~25 mark cited as the natural ceiling.

No official record settles this. What follows is opinion and analysis based on public numbers — how we judge.

Note. Weight and body fat are estimates from footage, not measurements. The verdict below is a statement of what we do not know. See the methodology page for how we judge.

Ross Edgley is on this list because of a contradiction. Endurance athletes are usually small — muscle is weight, and weight is a cost over 1,780 miles. Edgley is built like a forward and did this: in 2018 he became the first person to swim around Great Britain, 1,780 miles in 157 days, then swam the length of the English Channel, 510 km non-stop down the Yukon in 2024, and 1,610 km around Iceland in 2025.

The numbers

At around 5’11” and a muscular 230 lbs, the FFMI on this page clears the drug-free ceiling our methodology page cites — though the estimate rests on a body-fat figure we read from footage, and long-distance sea swimmers deliberately carry fat for insulation and fuel. A higher true body fat pulls the number back toward the line.

That uncertainty is real enough that we will not call it either way.

The honest complication

The physique is also, on its own, the strangest part of his story. Swimming that distance destroys lean tissue; he reportedly finishes these swims smaller than he starts. Whatever built him did so on land, over years, before the swims.

No failed test, no allegation, and no admission is on his record.

Verdict

Uncertain — a number above the line resting on the softest estimate we make, on an athlete whose sport should strip muscle rather than build it.

Common questions

Is Ross Edgley natty or on steroids?

This site rates Ross Edgley as uncertain. That is an opinion drawn from public numbers, not a statement of fact: the peak physique on this page works out to an FFMI of 27.5, against the ~25 mark cited as the natural ceiling.

Has Ross Edgley ever failed a drug test or admitted to using PEDs?

Nothing of the sort turned up in the sources on this page. Had it, the verdict would read confirmed instead of uncertain.

What is Ross Edgley's FFMI?

About 27.5. That comes from 5'11" (180 cm) and 231 lbs (105 kg) at roughly 15% body fat, normalized to 1.8 m. Drug-free lifters in the Kouri 1995 study topped out near 25.
