Usain Bolt: natty or not?
Uncertain 9.58 over 100 m and 19.19 over 200 m — records nobody has approached
Short answer. Verdict: uncertain. At the peak physique on this page, Usain Bolt is 6'5" (195 cm) and 207 lbs (94 kg) at roughly 7% body fat. That works out to an FFMI of 22.1, against the ~25 mark cited as the natural ceiling.
No official record settles this. What follows is opinion and analysis based on public numbers — how we judge.
The numbers (estimated)
| Peak physique | Racing weight, 207 lbs, in his world-record years |
|---|---|
| Height | 6'5" (195 cm) |
| Weight | 207 lbs (94 kg) |
| Body fat | ~7% |
| FFMI | 22.1 — ~25 is the cited natural ceiling |
Era by era (estimated)
| Era | Year | Age | Weight | Evidence | Body fat | FFMI |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| World-record season | 2009 | 23 | 207 lbs (94 kg) | reported | ~7% | 22.1 |
Note. Racing weight is the listed figure; the body-fat number is an estimate. The verdict below is a statement of what we do not know. See the methodology page for how we judge.
Usain Bolt ran 9.58 for 100 m and 19.19 for 200 m in 2009, at 6’5” and 207 lbs (94 kg). Seventeen years later nobody has been close.
Why he is on this list at all
Not because of his body. His FFMI is that of a well-built athlete and nothing more; sprinting does not reward the kind of mass this site usually measures.
He is here because of the era. Sprinting’s record book is a graveyard of stripped medals, and the fastest man in history arriving in a sport with that history invites the question automatically. His own Beijing relay gold was taken away in January 2017 when a retested sample from teammate Nesta Carter came back positive — a medal lost for someone else’s test.
What the record says
He had been tested four times before those Olympics, all negative, and his position has been consistent: “We work hard and we perform well and we know we’re clean.” No adverse finding has ever been recorded against him, including in the retesting programmes that have caught many of his contemporaries years after the fact.
Verdict
Uncertain — and this one is uncomfortable, which is why it is worth stating. There is no evidence against him: no test, no admission, no investigative record. There is also no measurement this site could take that would ever have caught a sprinter. Suspicion by association is not a finding, so we do not record one.
In their words
“We work hard and we perform well and we know we're clean.”
