Barry Bonds: natty or not?
Likely enhanced 762 career home runs and 73 in a season, both records, both disputed
Short answer. Verdict: likely enhanced. At the peak physique on this page, Barry Bonds is 6'2" (188 cm) and 238 lbs (108 kg) at roughly 12% body fat. That works out to an FFMI of 26.4, against the ~25 mark cited as the natural ceiling.
No official record settles this. What follows is opinion and analysis based on public numbers — how we judge.

A portrait taken at Pittsburgh Pirates spring training in March 1986, captioned as a rookie outfielder, has Bonds at 21. It is the before-picture the whole argument rests on.
Barry Bonds is the most famous doping case in American sport, and by this site’s rules he does not qualify as confirmed. That is worth explaining rather than fudging.
What the record actually holds
Bonds was central to the BALCO investigation, testified before a grand jury, was indicted in 2007 for perjury and obstruction, had the perjury charges dropped, was convicted of obstruction in 2011, and had that conviction overturned on appeal in 2015. BALCO’s products were “the clear” (THG, a designer steroid built to beat tests) and “the cream” (a testosterone salve), and his trainer Greg Anderson was named as supplying them.
And: he has never been caught explicitly using steroids and has steadfastly denied the allegations. Of the record he said: “This record is not tainted at all, at all, Period.”
So: no public positive test, no admission, no conviction left
standing. Our confirmed tier needs one of those three. He has none.
The numbers
Bonds is listed at 6’2” and 240 lbs, which produces an ordinary FFMI, like every ballplayer on this site.
The listed weights over time say more than the final one. As a rookie Bonds was listed at 6-foot-1 and 185 pounds, “tall and skinny, just like his baseball cards”; that settled at 6’1” and 190 lbs from 1992, and then in 2002 the official line became 6’2” and 228 pounds.
Two honest cautions about that. A team’s listed weight is a press-guide figure, not a scale reading, so the jump on paper in 2002 is a single edit that probably records several years of real change at once. And players thicken in their thirties without help.
What survives both cautions is the direction and the size: roughly 40 lbs added, in the second half of a career, by a man who arrived famous for speed. That is a fact about the record, not a read of a photograph. We still will not turn old pictures into a body-fat estimate and call it proof.
Verdict
Likely-enhanced — held near the top of that band on the BALCO record, the timing, and the testimony of people around him. Not confirmed, because the two things that would confirm it, his own admission or a positive test on the record, do not exist. Hall of Fame voters reached their own conclusion and kept him out for all ten years of his eligibility. That was their call to make; this page states what can be shown.
In their words
“This record is not tainted at all, at all, Period.”
Common questions
Is Barry Bonds natty or on steroids?
This site rates Barry Bonds as likely enhanced. That is an opinion drawn from public numbers, not a statement of fact: the peak physique on this page works out to an FFMI of 26.4, against the ~25 mark cited as the natural ceiling.
Has Barry Bonds ever failed a drug test or admitted to using PEDs?
Nothing of the sort turned up in the sources on this page. Had it, the verdict would read confirmed instead of likely enhanced.
What is Barry Bonds's FFMI?
