Sammy Sosa: natty or not?

A photo of him batting at Texas Rangers spring training, captioned circa 1989, has Sosa at 20 and matches the lean build the record describes for those years.
Sammy Sosa’s page is really about two statements nineteen years apart.
In 2005, through his attorney at a congressional hearing, he said: “To be clear, I have never taken illegal performance-enhancing drugs. I have never injected myself or had anyone inject me with anything.”
In December 2024 he said: “There were times I did whatever I could to recover from injuries in an effort to keep my strength up to perform over 162 games. I never broke any laws, but in hindsight, I made mistakes and I apologize.”
Confirmed — on the 2024 statement, read together with the 2003 test. Note what the 2024 wording does: it concedes doing “whatever I could,” denies illegality, and names nothing.
The numbers
Sosa is listed at 6’0” and 225 lbs, and his FFMI at that weight is unremarkable, like every ballplayer here.
The timeline is the part worth reading. At his professional debut in 1986, aged 17, he was “lean and lithe, about 165 pounds, with speed rather than power his greatest asset”. By the time the Cubs signed him in January 1996 he “had bulked up to a listed 200 pounds, and was swinging for the fences”. He is listed at 225 by the chase.
That is 60 lbs (27 kg) across a decade, on a man who was already 17 and close to full height when it started, and FFMI moving from about 20 to about 26. The shape of it matters as much as the size: the gain arrives alongside the switch from a speed player to a power hitter, and it keeps going after 30.
None of that is a test result, and this page does not treat it as one. It is simply the published record of what he weighed, which is better evidence than the photograph comparisons the argument usually runs on. We do not estimate body fat from old footage and call it evidence.
The corked bat
Worth including because it is usually thrown in as if it were the same thing. In June 2003 he was ejected for using a corked bat, said he had used it only in batting practice by accident, and apologised; MLB then tested 76 of his other bats and found them clean. Cheating with a bat is not doping, and neither one proves the other.
Verdict
Confirmed — by the 2003 test and his own 2024 apology, which stops well short of saying what he took.
